My Pet Sensitivity sells at-home intolerance tests for dogs and cats, checking against more than 1,100 food and environmental items, with results in about five days. Tests run roughly $80 to $150.

The appeal is easy to understand. A dog with recurring itching, upset stomach or ear problems is genuinely distressing, elimination diets take months of discipline, and a test promising answers in five days from a hair or saliva sample is exactly what an anxious owner wants.

The problem is the method. Tests of this kind — using hair or saliva rather than blood, often described as bioresonance or energetic testing — have been examined repeatedly and have not been shown to identify food intolerances reliably. Studies that submit multiple samples from the same animal, or samples from non-animal sources, have returned inconsistent and sometimes nonsensical results. A test that returns a long list of sensitivities for almost every sample will look impressive and mean very little.

The real cost is not the $80. It is that a list of forty foods to avoid sends an owner down months of dietary restriction while the actual cause — commonly environmental allergy, fleas, or a skin condition — goes untreated. Restricting a pet's diet on bad information can also create nutritional gaps.

What works instead, and it is not as convenient: see a vet. A proper elimination diet under supervision remains the reliable way to identify food intolerance, and a vet can rule out the more common causes first.
